Virginia

Virginia is unusually dense with history, mountains, coastline, food, and road-trip options. The official Virginia tourism site groups trips by regions from Southwest Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley to Northern Virginia, Central Virginia, Hampton Roads, the Chesapeake Bay, and the Eastern Shore, and it highlights national parks, Skyline Drive, the Blue Ridge Parkway, beaches, caverns, wineries, oysters, Black heritage, the American Revolution, Civil War sites, family attractions, accessible travel, and VA250 events. That range makes Virginia practical for both a Washington, DC side trip and a weeklong loop.

Shenandoah National Park is the state's signature outdoor drive. NPS places it just 75 miles from Washington, DC, with more than 200,000 acres of protected land, cascading waterfalls, vistas, wildflowers, wooded hollows, deer, songbirds, and black bears. Skyline Drive runs 105 miles through the park, with more than 60 peaks over 3,000 feet and access to roughly 500 miles of trails. Independent coverage notes heavy fall foliage traffic, more than 75 overlooks and pull-offs, four main entrances, Old Rag, the Appalachian Trail, Rapidan Camp, campgrounds, lodges, and nearby Luray Caverns.

For history, Colonial National Historical Park links Jamestown and Yorktown through the Colonial Parkway. NPS identifies Jamestown as the first permanent English settlement in North America, where European, Virginia Indian, and African cultures met, and Yorktown as the site of the October 19, 1781 Allied victory over British forces in the last major battle of the American Revolutionary War. The 23-mile Colonial Parkway connects Yorktown and Jamestown, but construction updates should be checked before driving. Williamsburg adds living-history museums, walkable streets, dining, and easy family logistics between the two NPS sites.

Virginia suits history buffs, families, hikers, wine travelers, oyster and seafood fans, cyclists, and couples planning mountain or coastal weekends. Spend two days in Shenandoah, two to three in Richmond or Williamsburg, or a week linking the Blue Ridge, Charlottesville, Richmond, and the Tidewater coast. Visitor Tip: for Skyline Drive in October, enter early on weekdays, bring layers for ridge weather, and check NPS road, fee, and construction updates before committing to the full drive.
