Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania is a large Mid-Atlantic state where U.S. founding history, Civil War history, industrial cities, Amish Country, mountains, rivers, lakefront, small towns, and food traditions are all plausible trip themes. Visit Pennsylvania organizes the state into regions including Pennsylvania Wilds, Great Lakes Region, Laurel Highlands, The Alleghenies, Valleys of the Susquehanna, Pittsburgh & Its Countryside, Lehigh Valley, Upstate PA, Dutch Country Roads, Pocono Mountains, and Philadelphia and the Countryside, with trip ideas for trails, lakes, fairs, waterfalls, rafting, stargazing, family getaways, Pride events, water parks, and unique stays.
Philadelphia is the first stop for American Revolution history. Independence National Historical Park preserves Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell, and NPS notes that the Declaration of Independence and U.S. Constitution were both debated and signed inside Independence Hall, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Liberty Bell Center does not require tickets, but Independence Hall procedures can vary by season, so visitors should verify timed-entry requirements and start at the Independence Visitor Center for restrooms, orientation, and free Wi-Fi.
Gettysburg National Military Park is the essential Civil War site. NPS describes the Battle of Gettysburg as a turning point in the Civil War, the bloodiest battle of the conflict, and the inspiration for Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address. First-time visitors should begin at the museum and visitor center, see the Cyclorama, drive the battlefield, walk Little Round Top and Cemetery Ridge, visit Gettysburg National Cemetery, and consider ranger programs or a licensed battlefield guide. NPS notes that reenactments do not take place inside the military park.
Pittsburgh adds rivers, museums, sports, neighborhoods, inclines, and Carnegie-era institutions; Lancaster County suits Amish Country, markets, covered bridges, and family travel; the Poconos and Laurel Highlands are better for hiking, rafting, skiing, and Fallingwater; Erie adds Lake Erie beaches. Visitor Tip: Pennsylvania is bigger than it looks on a map; build separate Philadelphia, Gettysburg/Lancaster, Pittsburgh/Laurel Highlands, or Poconos itineraries and reserve Independence Hall, Gettysburg tours, and peak fall or holiday lodging early.
