Oregon
Oregon is best understood through its seven regions and strong east-west contrasts: Pacific coastline, Portland and the Willamette Valley, the Columbia River Gorge, the Cascades, Southern Oregon, Central Oregon high desert, and wide-open Eastern Oregon. Travel Oregon highlights cities such as Portland, Bend, Eugene, Astoria, Hood River, Klamath Falls, Newport, and Baker City; destinations including Crater Lake, Multnomah Falls, Oregon Dunes, Painted Hills, Silver Falls, and Smith Rock; and planning categories for tribal nations, outdoor recreation, food and drink, scenic drives, accessible travel, sustainability, communities, travel alerts, and welcome centers.
Crater Lake National Park is the state’s singular national park and a must for photographers. NPS explains that Native Americans witnessed its formation 7,700 years ago when a violent eruption caused a tall peak to collapse; today the lake is fed by rain and snow, is the deepest in the United States, and is among the most pristine on Earth. Rim views, Wizard Island, Discovery Point, Garfield Peak, Mt. Scott, Vidae Falls, trolley tours, and winter scenery are highlights. Lingering snow can affect May and June visits, the lake is often hidden by clouds, and Cleetwood Cove Trail and Marina are closed for a major multi-year rehabilitation project.
The Columbia River Gorge, Oregon Coast, and Central Oregon are the other classic first-time routes. Travel Oregon notes 363 miles of unspoiled coastline, lighthouses, dunes, waterfalls, hot springs, food and drink, and old Oregon Trail wagon ruts. Independent current coverage of the Gorge emphasizes spring and fall for milder weather, waterfalls, wildflowers, vineyards, Hood River, White Salmon, rafting, biking, and shuttles or buses in peak season.
Portland is strongest for food carts, coffee, gardens, bookstores, neighborhoods, and transit; Bend is a practical base for Smith Rock, breweries, lava landscapes, and high-desert hikes; the coast rewards slow travel rather than rushing. Visitor Tip: Check Travel Oregon travel alerts, wildfire smoke, snow, beach safety, and permit requirements before finalizing a route, especially for Multnomah Falls, Crater Lake roads, the Gorge, and summer coastal weekends.
