New York
New York is not just New York City; the official I LOVE NY site divides the state into 11 vacation regions, including the Adirondacks, Catskills, Finger Lakes, Greater Niagara, Hudson Valley, Long Island, Capital-Saratoga, Central New York, Chautauqua-Allegheny, Thousand Islands-Seaway, and New York City. Planning categories include accessible travel, art and culture, food and drink, nature, outdoor adventures, seasons, Path Through History, state and national parks, waterfalls, lakes, scenic byways, family travel, LGBTQ travel, senior travel, and 2026 FIFA World Cup information.
New York City is the classic first-time gateway, and Statue of Liberty National Monument is the symbolic anchor. The National Park Service describes the statue as a gift from France, a universal symbol of freedom and democracy, dedicated by President Grover Cleveland on October 28, 1886. Crown and pedestal access require reservations; Liberty Island construction, ferry-security changes at The Battery, museum visits, Ellis Island, and accessibility should be checked before visiting. Allow a half day for Liberty and Ellis Islands, longer if using crown access.
Upstate New York works best as separate regional trips. The Adirondacks offer six million acres of “forever wild” landscape, High Peaks hiking, Lake George, Lake Placid, paddling, and Olympic sites. The Catskills add fly-fishing history, tubing, rafting, Bethel Woods, and mountain towns. The Finger Lakes suit wine, waterfalls, gorges, Rochester, Ithaca, and Corning. Greater Niagara centers on Niagara Falls and Buffalo, while the Hudson Valley combines river estates, art, hiking, farm markets, and train-friendly weekends from the city.
Summer is best for lakes, mountains, beaches, and festivals; fall is peak foliage season; winter favors skiing and city museums; spring is good for waterfalls and lower crowds. Visitor Tip: Do not combine NYC, Niagara Falls, the Adirondacks, and Long Island in a short trip; choose one region and reserve Statue ferry/crown access, peak foliage lodging, and major museum or event tickets ahead.
