New Hampshire

New Hampshire is a compact New England state with unusually quick shifts between seacoast towns, mountain notches, lakes, covered bridges, ski areas, farm stands, and small cities. Visit NH organizes planning around winter, spring, summer, fall, lodging, travel resources, events, agriculture, ATVing, biking, boating and cruises, camping, canoeing and kayaking, fishing, food and drink, hiking, road trips, scenic chairlifts, scenic drives, skiing, snowmobiling, train rides, waterfalls, state parks, covered bridges, and America’s 250th in the Granite State.

The White Mountains are the state’s main outdoor draw. First-time visitors usually focus on Franconia Notch, Crawford Notch, the Kancamagus Highway, Mount Washington, North Conway, Lincoln, waterfalls, scenic railways, and fall foliage drives. Conditions can change fast: even summer hikes require layers, rain gear, and conservative timing, while winter travel involves ice, snow, avalanche awareness in higher terrain, and early darkness. Families and casual travelers can use scenic drives, gondolas, waterfalls, short hikes, and train rides instead of committing to difficult summits.

Saint-Gaudens National Historical Park in Cornish adds an arts-and-history counterpoint to the mountains. NPS calls it the National Park for the Arts, preserving the home and studio of sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, with bronze sculptures, gardens, the Cornish Colony legacy, sculpture workshops, a summer concert series, and buildings open Thursday through Monday. It pairs well with the Connecticut River Valley, Hanover, covered bridges, and a slower western New Hampshire route.

Lake Winnipesaukee and the Lakes Region are classic summer stops, with boating, lake towns, beaches, hikes, ice cream, and family resorts; Portsmouth and the Seacoast add restaurants, harbor walks, historic houses, and easy Boston access. Fall is the busiest scenic season, summer is best for lakes and mountains, and winter centers on skiing and snowmobiling. Visitor Tip: Reserve foliage weekends early, start popular White Mountain hikes at dawn, and check weather, parking, and road conditions before driving into notches or trailheads.
