Nevada

Nevada is more than Las Vegas: it is a huge desert-and-mountain road-trip state with ghost towns, hot springs, mining history, Basque food, Lake Tahoe, dark skies, art installations, state and national parks, rockhounding, winter sports, and long empty highways. Travel Nevada organizes planning around lodging, casinos, RV parks, Las Vegas, Reno, Lake Tahoe, Virginia City, outdoor recreation, museums, food and drink, arts and culture, camping, history, winter and water sports, rockhounding, stargazing, hot springs, road trips, events, and responsible recreation.

Great Basin National Park is Nevada’s signature national park for travelers who want solitude. The National Park Service describes a landscape rising from sagebrush foothills to the 13,063-foot summit of Wheeler Peak, with ancient bristlecone pines, dark night skies, wilderness, and Lehman Caves. Cave tours, Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive, alpine lakes, bristlecone hikes, camping, stargazing, and summer wildflowers are the highlights, but road, trail, campground, and weather status should be checked because high-elevation snow can arrive early.

Southern Nevada adds Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Hoover Dam, Red Rock Canyon, Valley of Fire, and Las Vegas. NPS says Lake Mead spreads across 1.5 million acres of mountains, canyons, valleys, and two reservoirs, with scenic drives, biking, hiking, boating, fishing, camping, launch-ramp condition checks, more than 900 camping and RV sites, and bighorn sheep sightings. Travel Nevada also notes Hoover Dam receives more than seven million visitors annually.

Northern Nevada is better for Reno, Carson City, Virginia City, Lake Tahoe, the Loneliest Road in America, Elko, Ely, Black Rock Desert, and wide-open art and mining routes. Summer desert heat is serious in the south; winter snow affects mountains; shoulder seasons are best for road trips. Visitor Tip: Carry water, fuel up early, download maps, check road and heat warnings, and reserve Great Basin cave tours or Las Vegas-area timed entries before crossing remote stretches.
