Montana

Montana is a large, high-effort, high-reward state where distances, weather, wildlife, and reservations shape the trip. Visit Montana highlights rodeo, off-highway vehicles, camping, fishing, water recreation, events, ranches, cabins, campgrounds, hot springs, trip ideas, getting around, guide books, Indian Country, seasons, tribal recreation permits, river trips, Flathead Lake state parks, central and eastern Montana itineraries, and small-town fly-fishing routes. Most first-time visitors choose Glacier country, Yellowstone gateway towns, or a west-to-east road trip rather than trying to see everything.

Glacier National Park is the headline destination. NPS describes it as a showcase of melting glaciers, alpine meadows, carved valleys, spectacular lakes, more than 700 miles of trails, historic chalets and lodges, and Going-to-the-Sun Road. The park is extremely busy in summer, and 2026 planning pages flag changing shuttle details, Logan Pass guidance, construction, lodging and dining planning, wildfires, roads, trails, and current conditions. Visitors should expect short operating windows for high-country roads, crowded trailheads, and rapidly changing mountain weather.

Yellowstone also belongs in many Montana itineraries because Gardiner, West Yellowstone, and Cooke City are key gateways. NPS notes Yellowstone became the first national park on March 1, 1872 and is known for hydrothermal features, wildlife, camping, hiking, seasonal roads, bear safety, early lodging and campground reservations, and current operating dates. Montana trips can combine Yellowstone with Bozeman, Livingston, Paradise Valley, Big Sky, or Red Lodge, but the drive times still require restraint.

Beyond the parks, Missoula, Bozeman, Helena, Butte, Billings, Whitefish, Flathead Lake, the Missouri River, the Bighorn, and eastern badlands reward travelers interested in fly fishing, breweries, history, Indigenous culture, hot springs, dinosaur sites, and open-road photography. Visitor Tip: Book park lodging, vehicle access, shuttles, campgrounds, and guided trips early, carry bear spray where appropriate, and check tribal permit, wildfire, road, and weather updates before entering remote areas.
