Massachusetts

Massachusetts is unusually dense with history, coast, colleges, museums, food, sports, and seasonal scenery. VisitMA organizes travel around food and drink, family attractions, arts and entertainment, history and heritage, sports and outdoors, shopping, transportation, seasons, regions, events, LGBTQ+ travel, MA250, and Soccer 2026. The official regions are Greater Boston, Cape Cod and the Islands, North of Boston, Central Massachusetts, South of Boston, and Western Massachusetts.

Boston is the natural first stop. Boston National Historical Park interprets the city’s revolutionary past as the “Cradle of Liberty,” including a network of federally, municipally, and privately operated sites tied to independence and later social, political, and environmental movements. The 2.5-mile Freedom Trail links downtown Boston and Charlestown landmarks; NPS highlights Faneuil Hall, the Bunker Hill Monument, Charlestown Navy Yard, USS Constitution, Old South Meeting House, Old North Church, and Black Heritage Trail tours. Allow at least a full day for the trail and two to three days for Boston museums, neighborhoods, food, and harbor time.

Cape Cod National Seashore protects 40 miles of Outer Beach, marshes, ponds, uplands, lighthouses, cultural landscapes, cranberry bogs, swimming beaches, walking trails, and biking routes. NPS points visitors to six national seashore beaches, 11 hiking trails, shark-safety guidance, oversand-driving permits, lighthouse visits, fishing rules, and lifeguards from late June through Labor Day. Sunrise over the Atlantic and sunset over Cape Cod Bay are both possible in the park.

Beyond Boston and the Cape, Salem is popular for maritime history and October events, Plymouth for early colonial history, the Berkshires for Tanglewood, museums, hiking, and fall foliage, and the Pioneer Valley for college towns and rail trails. Summer is best for beaches and islands, fall for foliage and Salem crowds, spring for Boston walking, and winter for museums and ski areas. Visitor Tip: Use transit in Boston, book Cape or island lodging and ferries early, and check timed-entry, beach, ferry, and MA250 event details close to travel dates.
