Maryland

Maryland is compact but varied, with Chesapeake Bay towns, Atlantic beaches, Civil War and War of 1812 history, Appalachian mountains, seafood traditions, scenic byways, and easy access from Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Delaware. Visit Maryland organizes trip planning around water experiences, the Chesapeake Bay Loop, Underground Railroad history, the C&O Canal, African American heritage, civil rights, family travel, scenic byways, seafood, breweries, distilleries, wineries, outdoor recreation, events, shopping, and regions such as Baltimore, Annapolis, the Eastern Shore, Ocean City, Deep Creek, and Western Maryland.

Baltimore and Annapolis are the strongest urban anchors. Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine preserves the fort whose defense during the Battle of Baltimore on September 13-14, 1814 inspired Francis Scott Key to write the words that became the U.S. national anthem; the National Park Service also notes later Civil War and World War II stories. Annapolis pairs the Maryland State House, U.S. Naval Academy area, brick streets, harbor cruises, sailing culture, and Chesapeake dining.

The Eastern Shore and Ocean City deliver Maryland’s beach and bay experience. Assateague Island National Seashore is the standout natural stop, with ocean beaches, salt marshes, maritime forests, coastal bays, kayaking, camping, fall bird migration, and wild horses that must be viewed from a distance. NPS warns that hours, fees, surf conditions, insects, heat, weather, and barrier-island conditions change, so visitors should check current conditions and plan ahead for camping or over-sand vehicle permits.

Western Maryland adds Deep Creek Lake, mountain drives, waterfalls, rail trails, and the C&O Canal corridor. Spring and fall are best for mild city walks and scenic drives; summer is beach, boating, and crab season; winter works for museums and Deep Creek snow activities. Visitor Tip: On summer weekends, leave early for the Bay Bridge and Eastern Shore, reserve beach lodging well ahead, and verify Fort McHenry, Assateague, ferry, and campground details on official pages before departure.
