Maine
Maine is a coastal-and-forest state where travelers come for rocky shorelines, islands, lighthouses, lobster, small towns, mountains, lakes, wildlife, fall foliage, and winter sports. Visit Maine’s official site highlights historic downtowns, lighthouses, road trips, seasons, arts and heritage, festivals, tours, family attractions, farms and farmers markets, outdoors, lobster and seafood, breweries, wineries, distilleries, accessibility, travel advisories, and a responsible-travel promise called Look Out For ME.
Acadia National Park is the headline destination. The National Park Service says the park protects the highest rocky headlands on the U.S. Atlantic coast, abundant habitats, and rich cultural heritage, with about 4 million visits per year, 27 miles of historic motor roads, 158 miles of hiking trails, and 45 miles of carriage roads. A year-round entrance pass is required, Cadillac Summit Road needs vehicle reservations from late May to mid-October, and all campsites must be reserved online in advance.
First-time visitors often pair Acadia and Bar Harbor with Portland, Freeport, Camden, Rockland, Boothbay Harbor, Kennebunkport, or the Midcoast. Portland is best for restaurants, breweries, ferries, art, and walkable neighborhoods; the Midcoast is strong for windjammer sailing, lobster shacks, islands, and galleries; western Maine and the Katahdin region suit hikers, paddlers, moose safaris, and dark-sky travel. Visit Maine also highlights puffin cruises, oyster farm tours, Registered Maine Guides, lobster boat tours, and the L.L.Bean flagship store.
Summer is vivid but busy and expensive on the coast; fall brings foliage and harvest travel; spring is quieter and good for birding and fishing; winter suits skiing, snowshoeing, and cozy town weekends. Fog, cold water, ticks, black flies, and fast-changing mountain weather all matter. Visitor Tip: Reserve Acadia lodging, campsites, Cadillac access, and coastal dining early for summer and foliage season, and pack layers even when inland or southern New England feels warm.
