Hawaii

Hawaii is an island-by-island trip rather than a single destination. Go Hawaii, the official visitor guide, organizes planning around Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Maui, and the Island of Hawaii, with categories for adventure, culinary travel, eco-tourism, family trips, culture, hula, music, luau, language, safety, weather, and responsible travel. Most first-time visitors choose one or two islands; trying to cover more usually adds airport time and cost without improving the trip.

Oahu is the easiest starting point because Honolulu is the main air hub and combines Waikiki, Pearl Harbor, museums, nightlife, shopping, beaches, and the North Shore. Pearl Harbor National Memorial honors those affected by the December 7, 1941 attack and marks the United States’ entry into World War II. The National Park Service notes that the grounds and museums are free, but program reservations are recommended for the USS Arizona Memorial; bags are not allowed at the park, though storage is available onsite.

The Island of Hawaii is best for volcanoes, long scenic drives, manta-ray tours, coffee country, black-lava landscapes, and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The park extends from sea level to 13,680 feet, protects the summits of Kilauea and Mauna Loa, and is both an International Biosphere Reserve and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visitors should check current eruption viewing, construction closures, summit weather, and volcanic gas conditions before driving across the island.

Maui suits beaches, whale watching in winter, Haleakala, resort stays, road trips, and post-wildfire-sensitive travel planning; Kauai is best for photographers, hikers, couples, and nature-focused trips; Lanai is quiet and resort-oriented; Molokai is community-centered and less built for conventional tourism. Independent 2026 travel coverage emphasizes matching islands to travel style and using shoulder seasons to reduce crowd pressure. Visitor Tip: Choose islands by purpose, book rental cars and key reservations early, follow ocean-safety warnings, and use locally guided, culturally respectful tours whenever possible.
