Florida

Florida is best planned by region because its visitor experiences are spread across long coastlines, theme-park corridors, springs, wetlands, islands, and historic towns. Visit Florida highlights beaches, theme parks, cool cities, food, attractions, outdoor adventure, arts and culture, shopping, events, webcams, welcome centers, toll-road information, and eight travel regions from Northwest Florida to the Keys and Southeast Florida.

First-time itineraries often focus on one of four themes: Orlando and Central Florida theme parks; Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Palm Beaches, and the Florida Keys; Gulf Coast beaches around Tampa Bay, Clearwater, St. Petersburg, Sarasota, Naples, and Fort Myers; or Northeast Florida history and beaches around St. Augustine, Jacksonville, and Amelia Island. Drivers should account for toll roads, long intra-state distances, weekend beach traffic, and hurricane-season weather from June through November.

Everglades National Park is the essential natural counterpoint to the beaches and resorts. The National Park Service says it was established in 1947 as the first national park created for biodiversity, protecting 1.5 million acres of wetland, forest, and marine habitat. Shark Valley biking and tram tours, Anhinga Trail wildlife, Flamingo paddling and boating, Gulf Coast access, birding, alligators, and ranger or concession tours are highlights. The dry season is generally easier for wildlife viewing and mosquitoes; wet-season visits require heat, storm, and insect preparation.

Florida works for families, beach travelers, theme-park fans, birders, anglers, paddlers, cruise passengers, food travelers, and snowbirds, but the best month depends heavily on the region. Winter and spring are comfortable and busy; summer is hot, humid, stormy, and useful for lower rates or water-focused trips. Visitor Tip: Before booking, check park reservation systems, hurricane forecasts, beach flag conditions, toll routes, and whether your target destination is in peak snowbird, spring-break, or holiday season.
