California

California is best planned as several trips rather than one quick circuit: the official state tourism site divides the state into regions that range from Pacific beaches and major cities to deserts, wine country, redwood forests, and the High Sierra. First-time visitors usually anchor a route around San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, Yosemite, the Central Coast, or the desert parks, then add food, museums, theme parks, scenic drives, or outdoor time based on season.

The state has unusually varied public-land scenery. Yosemite National Park, first protected in 1864, covers nearly 1,200 square miles and is known for granite cliffs, waterfalls, meadows, wilderness, and giant sequoias. Do not treat it as a casual drive-through stop in peak season: the National Park Service warns of traffic, entrance waits, and limited parking, and wilderness and Half Dome hikes require permits. Spring is best for waterfalls, summer opens the high country when roads are clear, fall is calmer, and winter can bring snow and chain requirements.

Beyond Yosemite, California works well for travelers who like combining urban culture with scenery. San Francisco pairs with Muir Woods, Point Reyes, Napa or Sonoma; Los Angeles pairs with beaches, art museums, studio tours, and the San Gabriel Mountains; San Diego adds Balboa Park, surf beaches, and family attractions; the Central Coast offers Monterey, Big Sur viewpoints, Santa Barbara, and wine regions. Desert travelers should target cooler months for Joshua Tree, Death Valley, and Palm Springs; summer desert heat can be dangerous.

Plan distances carefully: California is large, mountain passes and coastal roads can close, and wildfire smoke or winter storms can affect routes. Most visitors need a car outside the densest urban areas, though rail, transit, ferries, and park shuttles help in select corridors. Allow a week for one region, two weeks for a north-south sampler, and more for national parks. Visitor Tip: Check Visit California travel alerts, Caltrans QuickMap, and individual park reservation pages before locking in lodging, especially for Yosemite, Highway 1, mountain passes, and summer beach weekends.
