Arizona
Arizona is a Southwest travel staple for the Grand Canyon, Sonoran Desert, red-rock country, Route 66, dark skies, Native American cultural landscapes, spa resorts, golf, and long scenic drives. Visit Arizona, the official state tourism site, highlights the Grand Canyon, Sedona, Antelope Canyon near Page, Monument Valley on the Navajo Nation, Saguaro National Park, Lake Powell and Glen Canyon, Havasu Falls, Petrified Forest National Park, Scottsdale, Tombstone, the Verde Valley, and Sonoita wine country.
The Grand Canyon is the first-time anchor. The National Park Service says the park includes 278 miles of the Colorado River and adjacent uplands on ancestral homelands of 11 present-day Tribal Communities, with a mile-deep canyon visible from both South and North rims. The South Rim has the most services and is open year-round, while the North Rim is seasonal and more remote. Tucson adds Saguaro National Park, whose two districts preserve Sonoran Desert landscapes around giant saguaros; Phoenix and Scottsdale offer museums, desert gardens, resorts, restaurants, and spring training; Sedona is strongest for sunrise and sunset photography, hiking, mountain biking, and red-rock drives.
Plan five to seven days for a Phoenix-Sedona-Grand Canyon loop, or 10 days to include Tucson, Page, Petrified Forest, or Monument Valley. Visit Arizona says Phoenix and southern Arizona are most comfortable from October through April, while northern Arizona, including Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon rims, is best from May through October; monsoon season from July through September can bring dramatic but dangerous storms. A rental car is usually the best way to connect major sites, and many iconic places require separate permits, Tribal guides, timed reservations, parking fees, or shuttle planning.
Arizona suits hikers, photographers, families, geology fans, spa travelers, snowbirds, Indigenous culture travelers, golfers, and road-trippers. Heat is the main safety issue: hike early, carry more water than expected, and do not underestimate low-desert summer temperatures. Visitor Tip: Match the itinerary to elevation and season; Phoenix and Tucson are winter-friendly, while Flagstaff, the Grand Canyon, and high country are better when the desert is dangerously hot.
