Alabama

Alabama is strongest for travelers who want civil rights history, Gulf Coast beaches, space history, music heritage, barbecue, and Southern Appalachian scenery in one road trip. The official Alabama travel site is the broad trip-planning source, while the National Park Service anchors several of the state's most important visitor experiences: Birmingham Civil Rights National Monument, Freedom Riders National Monument in Anniston, Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail, Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site, and Little River Canyon National Preserve.

First-time visitors should give Birmingham and Montgomery priority if history is the reason for the trip. In Birmingham, the NPS describes the 1963 campaign through sites such as 16th Street Baptist Church, Kelly Ingram Park, A.G. Gaston Motel, and partner museums including the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute. Montgomery pairs the Alabama State Capitol, Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church, the Rosa Parks Museum, the Equal Justice Initiative's Legacy Sites, and nearby Selma, where the Edmund Pettus Bridge and Selma to Montgomery route add essential context.

For variety, add Huntsville's U.S. Space & Rocket Center, Mobile's historic districts and Mardi Gras traditions, Muscle Shoals music sites, or the beaches of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. The Gulf Shores tourism office lists beaches, Gulf State Park, hiking, boating, dolphin cruises, fishing, golf, seafood, festivals, and lodging options, making the coast the easiest family or beach add-on. In northeast Alabama, Little River Canyon offers waterfalls, canyon overlooks, wooded trails, picnic areas, and the JSU Little River Canyon Center, which the NPS lists as open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Central, though visitors should verify before driving.

A focused Alabama trip takes three to five days; a Birmingham-Montgomery-Selma history route can be done in a long weekend, while adding the Gulf Coast or Huntsville needs a week. Spring and fall are best for walking tours and outdoor sites; summer is humid and busy on the coast, with Gulf hurricane risk. A car is essential outside central city districts. Visitor Tip: Check museum hours and timed-entry policies first, then build the route around Birmingham, Montgomery, and Selma before adding beaches or mountains.
