Petrified Forest National Park

Petrified Forest National Park in northeastern Arizona protects colorful badlands, Triassic fossils, one of the world’s notable concentrations of petrified wood, grassland, archaeological sites, historic Route 66 traces, and Painted Desert views. The park works well as a drive-through national park from Interstate 40 or Highway 180, but it is richer than a quick roadside stop. First-time highlights include the Painted Desert overlooks, Painted Desert Inn, Puerco Pueblo, Newspaper Rock, Blue Mesa, Crystal Forest, Giant Logs, Long Logs, Agate House, and the old Route 66 alignment.

Visit Arizona describes Petrified Forest as a geologic treasure chest in the high desert and notes the 28-mile Main Park Road, frequent pullouts, Rainbow Forest Museum, Painted Desert Visitor Center, paved short hikes, and longer routes through badlands and hoodoos. The park is especially good for families, geology fans, fossil enthusiasts, photographers, archaeology-minded travelers, Route 66 road-trippers, and visitors who prefer short walks with big scenery.

A basic drive with several stops takes two to three hours; a full day allows Blue Mesa, Long Logs, museum exhibits, Painted Desert Inn, and a backcountry route. NPS lists a $25 private-vehicle pass, $20 motorcycle pass, $15 per-person pass, and $45 park annual pass, all valid for seven days where applicable. The park does not accept cash, and the annual pass can be purchased in the park with debit or credit card only.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons; summer can be hot, windy, and stormy, and winter can be cold with occasional snow or icy roads. Elevation is roughly high-desert, so bring water, sun protection, layers, and wind-aware clothing. Collecting petrified wood, fossils, pottery, rocks, or artifacts is illegal and damages the park; stay on trails and leave everything in place. Nearby pairings include Holbrook, Winslow, Route 66 sites, Meteor Crater, Hubbell Trading Post, Canyon de Chelly, and the Navajo and Hopi regions with respectful planning.

Visitor Tip: Drive the full park road north-to-south or south-to-north instead of turning around at one viewpoint. Save time for Blue Mesa and Giant Logs, and never remove petrified wood, even tiny pieces.
