New River Gorge National Park and Preserve

New River Gorge National Park & Preserve protects more than 70,000 acres along a rugged, north-flowing whitewater river in southern West Virginia. NPS describes the New River as among the oldest rivers on the continent and highlights deep canyons, scenic overlooks, cultural history, and abundant recreation. First-time visitors usually focus on Canyon Rim Visitor Center, the New River Gorge Bridge, Long Point Trail, Endless Wall Trail, Grandview, Sandstone Falls, Thurmond, and Fayette Station Road.

The park is especially strong for whitewater rafting, rock climbing, hiking, mountain biking, fishing, history walks, and bridge photography. Independent travel coverage notes that the park’s 2020 redesignation made it the nation’s 63rd national park and emphasizes rafting and climbing as defining activities, with the preserve portion retaining hunting and fishing traditions. Thurmond, Nuttallburg, and other historic sites connect the gorge to railroad, coal, timber, and Appalachian community history.

There is no entrance fee, and NPS says entrance passes are not required or sold at the park. A half day can cover Canyon Rim, the bridge overlooks, and one short hike; a full day allows Long Point or Endless Wall plus Fayette Station Road or Grandview; two or three days are better for rafting, climbing, Sandstone Falls, and historic districts. Roads can be narrow, steep, and winding, and many popular trailheads have limited parking.

Spring wildflowers, summer rafting, fall foliage, and winter quiet all have appeal. The annual Bridge Day festival, traditionally in October, is a major regional event centered on the New River Gorge Bridge, but visitors should verify current dates and closures. Fayetteville is the most convenient food and lodging hub, with outfitters, restaurants, shops, and quick access to bridge-area trails. Beckley, Hinton, Summersville Lake, Babcock State Park, and Gauley River National Recreation Area pair well nearby.

Visitor Tip: Start at Canyon Rim Visitor Center, then choose one gorge-view hike rather than trying to drive every unit in one day. Book rafting or climbing with a reputable outfitter before arrival during peak summer and fall weekends.
