Indiana Dunes National Park

Indiana Dunes National Park protects 15 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline and about 16,000 acres of dunes, beaches, woodlands, prairies, wetlands, and bird-rich habitat in northwest Indiana. NPS emphasizes that wind and waves have shaped a mosaic of habitats here for millennia, with more than 50 miles of trails through shifting dunes, quiet woods, sunny prairies, and lush wetlands. Its urban-adjacent setting makes it one of the easiest national parks to pair with Chicago.

First-time visitors should start at the Indiana Dunes Visitor Center, then choose among West Beach, Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk, Mount Baldy area viewpoints when open, Cowles Bog Trail, Miller Woods, Great Marsh Trail, Bailly Homestead and Chellberg Farm, and beach access points such as Lake View or Central Avenue. The park is good for families, beachgoers, birders, hikers, photographers, rail travelers, Chicago weekenders, and visitors interested in conservation history.

A quick visit can take one to three hours for a beach and visitor-center stop; a full day allows a hike, beach time, sunset, and a historic or wetland stop. NPS lists entrance fees of $25 per private vehicle, $20 per motorcycle, $15 per person, and $45 for an Indiana Dunes National Park annual pass. The national park and Indiana Dunes State Park have separate fees and passes, and NPS explicitly says passes do not work between the two parks.

Summer is best for swimming but brings crowds, hot sand, and rip-current concerns. Spring and fall are strong for birding and hiking, while winter can bring shelf ice hazards and quiet trails. The South Shore Line’s Dune Park station provides rail access to the area, and the park has accessible beach areas at West Beach and Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk. Nearby pairings include Indiana Dunes State Park, Michigan City, Chesterton, Valparaiso, Gary’s Miller Beach, and Chicago.

Visitor Tip: Decide whether you are entering the national park or the state park before paying fees or navigating to a beach. Check rip-current and beach-weather warnings before swimming, even on calm-looking Lake Michigan days.
