Glacier National Park

Glacier National Park in northwest Montana is a mountain park of carved valleys, alpine meadows, glacial lakes, historic lodges, wildlife habitat, and the Going-to-the-Sun Road. NPS describes it as a showcase of melting glaciers and more than 700 miles of trails, with human history tied to Indigenous nations, early tourism, chalets, and road engineering. First-time visitors usually focus on Going-to-the-Sun Road, Logan Pass, Lake McDonald, St. Mary, Many Glacier, Two Medicine, Hidden Lake Overlook, and Avalanche Lake.

The park is best for hikers, photographers, wildlife watchers, historic lodge fans, road-trippers, and families prepared for mountain weather and crowds. In 2026, NPS states that no vehicle reservations are required in any areas of the park, but visitors should still expect congestion, construction delays, entrance lines, and intense competition for Logan Pass parking. The park shuttle is changing in 2026, so visitors should check current route and access details before relying on it for long hikes.

A single day can cover Going-to-the-Sun Road and short viewpoint walks, but three to five days are more realistic for hikes in multiple park areas. Entrance passes are required, and NPS lists a $35 private-vehicle summer pass, $25 winter vehicle pass, $30 motorcycle pass, $20 per-person pass, and a $70 park annual pass. The park is cashless, and non-U.S. residents age 16 and older may owe an additional $100 fee unless entering with an eligible annual or America the Beautiful pass.

July through September is the easiest season for full road access, though snow, wildfire smoke, construction, and trail closures can still affect plans. Bring layers, rain gear, bear spray where legal and appropriate, water, and patience. West Glacier, Whitefish, Columbia Falls, St. Mary, Browning, East Glacier Park, and Waterton Lakes National Park in Canada all pair well depending on route and time.

Visitor Tip: Start before dawn for Logan Pass or choose a less congested area such as Two Medicine when parking is the priority. Verify road, shuttle, construction, and smoke conditions the night before because Glacier plans can change quickly.
