Gateway Arch National Park

Gateway Arch National Park in St. Louis commemorates Thomas Jefferson’s vision of continental expansion, the peoples and cultures shaped by that expansion, St. Louis’s role as a Mississippi River gateway, and Dred and Harriet Scott’s freedom suits at the Old Courthouse. The 630-foot Gateway Arch is the central landmark, but the museum beneath it and the restored Old Courthouse are essential for understanding the site beyond its skyline value.

The park is compact and urban, making it good for families, architecture fans, history buffs, photographers, road-trippers, and visitors with limited time. Plan 90 minutes for the museum and grounds, or two to three hours if taking the Tram Ride to the Top, visiting the Old Courthouse, and allowing for security. The visitor center is open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., according to NPS, and the tram experience typically takes 45 to 60 minutes.

The museum, gift store, cafe, Arch grounds, and Old Courthouse are free. The tram and documentary movie require tickets, and NPS notes that tram reservations are recommended because busy days sell out. Tram adult prices vary by date, with ticketing through GatewayArch.com; passholders receive a small discount tied to the NPS entrance-fee portion. The tram ride to the top is not ADA accessible, though the museum, documentary movie, and Old Courthouse are accessible.

Parking is not included, so visitors usually use downtown garages, street parking, rideshare, MetroLink, or hotels within walking distance. Spring cherry blossoms, sunrise, blue-hour skyline views, and Fourth of July fireworks are strong photography moments. Nearby pairings include the Mississippi riverfront, Citygarden, Busch Stadium, the City Museum, and downtown St. Louis restaurants.

Visitor Tip: Buy tram tickets in advance and leave time for airport-style security before your boarding window. For visitors with mobility concerns, focus on the museum, grounds, and Old Courthouse rather than the tram.
