Arches National Park

Arches National Park sits north of Moab, Utah, and protects a red-rock landscape with more than 2,000 natural stone arches, plus fins, pinnacles, balanced rocks, desert washes, sunset viewpoints, and dark skies. NPS highlights Delicate Arch, Double O Arch, Devils Garden, Park Avenue, night-sky viewing, trails from a few hundred yards to more than 7 miles, and geology shaped by salt beds, erosion, and time. The park is compact compared with many western parks, but heat, traffic, and exposed trails make planning important.

First-time visitors typically drive the park road, stop at Park Avenue, Balanced Rock, the Windows Section, Double Arch, and Delicate Arch viewpoints, then choose a hike based on weather and ability. The Delicate Arch trail is the iconic strenuous outing, while Landscape Arch and the Windows area work better for shorter visits. NPS warns that heavy visitation and traffic are common spring through fall, and visitors should check webcams, alerts, and current access guidance before driving to the entrance.

Visit Utah treats Arches as part of the Mighty 5 national-park circuit and encourages visitors to pair the park with Moab-area experiences, Canyonlands, Dead Horse Point, guided trips, and responsible travel. Independent park guides emphasize spring and fall for better temperatures, winter for quieter conditions, and advance planning for special-permit areas such as Fiery Furnace when available. The park has no food, gas, or lodging inside; Moab is the practical base for restaurants, hotels, outfitters, and supplies.

Most travelers need one full day for the main scenic drive and short hikes, two days if adding Devils Garden, Fiery Furnace, sunrise or night photography, and nearby Canyonlands. Photographers favor sunrise at the Windows and late light at Delicate Arch, while families do well with early mornings, shorter trails, and shade breaks in town. Visitor Tip: enter very early or later in the afternoon during peak season, carry more water than feels necessary, and verify current entrance-management rules before assuming you can arrive at any time.
